Experience and judgment
How the work developed
My formal foundation began with Dog Trainer Academy. It gave me a structured understanding of how dogs learn and communicate.
Experience took that foundation further. Working with dogs and families inside their homes showed me that similar behavior can come from very different places.
Sometimes a dog needs to learn a skill. In other cases, fear, pain, instinct, excitement, or overwhelm may be involved. At other times, the dog understands what has been asked but sees no reason to put aside what they want.
Those situations may look alike from the outside, but they do not need the same response.
Inside the household
What I pay attention to
I begin by listening to what life with your dog is actually like—not only the incident that finally prompted you to call.
I pay attention to what happens at the door, how attention begins and ends, whether you can create space, how your dog responds when they strongly want something, and what changes when a situation becomes more interesting or difficult.
These exchanges can appear unimportant on their own. Together, they help show how your dog sees the people around them, what responsibilities they may have taken on, and whose judgment they have learned to rely upon.
I also consider what your dog knows, what they may fear, whether the expectation is clear and fair, and whether there are genuine physical, emotional, or situational limits.
My role is to understand which details matter for this dog, in this home, with these people.

What working with me is like
I am calm, direct, and practical.
I will tell you what I see and explain why I believe it matters. I am not there to judge how the problem began or make you feel foolish for something you did not know.
Most people have been doing the best they can with the information they have.
The work is collaborative. I may demonstrate something, but the important change is not that your dog responds to me. Your dog lives with you, and it is your guidance that needs to matter after I leave.
A useful session leaves you with more than instructions. You should understand what is happening, recognize the moments that matter, and know how to respond in a way you can continue in ordinary life.
A matter of responsibility
What I mean by leadership
I use leadership to mean accepting responsibility for the decisions that should belong to the human.
That includes responsibility for safety, welfare, communication, boundaries, and calm follow-through. It means becoming reliable enough that a dog does not feel responsible for handling everything themselves.
This does not require fear, discomfort, or a battle of wills.
When human judgment becomes dependable and meaningful to the dog, trust and respect can grow. The dog has a reason to look to their person for direction and to put aside what they want when something more important is being asked.
At home
Life with my own dogs
At home, I share life with Raina, my Rottweiler, and Coreen, my Terrier.
Between a Rottweiler and a Terrier, there is no shortage of personality or opinion in the house.
What I want with my own dogs is a life I can genuinely enjoy with them. I want them to be included, welcomed around other people, trusted in more situations, able to go places with me, and comfortable relaxing at home.
That purpose stays close to me when I work with another family. The goal is not a performance that looks impressive for a few minutes. It is a dog who can take part in more of life with the people who care about them.
